The watercolours in this gallery were all painted after Mary had started painting in oils. They became square, smaller and more intense than previously. An element of abstraction made its appearance, achieved by giving the watercolour more freedom to flow spontaneously. The inspiration was initially the landscape of the Pyrénées Orientales, the region in which she had settled in France, but Venice and other places visited in Europe also featured.
