About Mary Jose's Watercolours
Mary Jose’s paintings have evolved in the tradition of English watercolour, but after her study of Chinese brush painting in Singapore, always with a sense of oriental composition: harmonious asymmetry and the importance of space. In the beginning her watercolours were figurative, in response to the landscape and life of the eight countries in which she subsequently lived, in the Middle and Far East, the Caribbean and South Africa. Subsequently the experience of painting in oils brought to her watercolours an energy linked to stronger colours and a more impressionist style, verging on the abstract.
Finally it has been in abstraction that she has found the freedom to express herself in a constant play between control and abandon, clarity and fluidity, and to realise the emotional impact of colour.
